Inspired by a real story and directed by Ken Kwapis, this is a 2012 British-American drama about "Operation Breakthrough"---the 1988 international effort to rescue gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska.
If you're an animal lover, you'd love this heartwarming tale.

A little too sentimental for me but a good family film.

True story set in Alaska.

Total family feelgood flick. Krasinski and Barrymore are very likeable. The story is true and the dialogue is well written. The setting is the fun 80's which I like as well. Nothing I would be compelled to watch again, but serves its purpose well.

I appreciate the fact that the film did not completely romanticize the whales’ rescue. Rather, it showed the differing points of view and interest/agendas at play. Overall, “The Big Miracle” is a nice movie, which I think children especially will enjoy.

Sexual Content: Kissing and hugging is shown.

Coarse Language: A handful of extremely mild obscenities and some name-calling. (This film is a family-friendly film and none of these words are truly profane.)

Other: There is argumentative bickering. Cold temperatures cause metal items to ice to people, as well as causing a layer of ice to form on some people. Wine and other alcoholic beverages are consumed socially.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Death of an animal is shown. A man uses a chainsaw to cut a hole in ice near a whale.

Violence: A harpoon is thrown at a whale; we do not see it make contact.

A film about Operation Breakthough, which was an international effort to rescue three gray whales (a family, complete with a little baby whale) trapped in ice near the incredibly northern location of Point Barrow, Alaska, in 1988, highlighting how the press managed to both help and hinder the cause.
