A delightful and touching cartoon about a mermaid and a man who have fallen in love, but there are numerous obstacles to the realization and exploration of their love. All of the songs from the second half were rather third rate, but those in the first half were playful and fun. The plot had a few ridiculous aspects to it, especially the un-mythic and un-symbolically justified regaining of Ariel's voice from a shell which broke because it was torn off the witch by Ariel's bird friends at the wedding of what ought to have been Ariel and the prince.

The Little Mermaid (1989) is a funny and heartwarming movie. The movie introduces mythical creatures such as mermaids to young children. The Little Mermaid will capture the attention of the young and old. Almost a Disney princess classic, Ariel, and her sea-friends will take you on a thrilling adventure in and out of the sea. As Ariel faces some "problems" in her father-daughter relationship, she finds herself choosing between listening to her father or disobeying him and falling in love with a human. Ariel soon makes a deal with an evil sea witch named Ursula, which Ursula prevents from being completed. She soon sabotages Ariel's supposed-to-be wedding and casts a spell on the prince. She soon breaks Prince Eric free from the spell and marry's him, living happily ever after. Rating 5/5

The Little Mermaid was probably the first Disney movie I ever saw. Though my eye is more cynical nowadays and I know how to identify various cost-cutting production tricks, this movie still holds up rather well.

One of the first films I ever saw in theaters, still a favorite and the sea witch Ursula still scares me.

One of the first movies I ever remember seeing in theaters as a kid. Ursula the Sea Witch still scares me, but this is a great Disney film that the whole family can enjoy.

I hadn't seen this in a long time, and watching it again I have to say that I actually enjoyed it.
Even though Ariel's character is shallow and she isn't smart to go chasing the first human she sees, I think that there are still plenty of things to like about this movie.
The songs are ridiculously catchy, the villain is great, and Prince Eric gets to be the hero. The animation, though older, is awesome, and the story gets a happy ending.

Obviously, I'm not the only one here who thought that Ariel (as the little mermaid) was nothing but the most self-centred, shallow, empty-headed, little bimbo who ever emerged from out of the deep, blue sea and walked on land.

Naturally - To make this story as palatable as possible - Ariel was packaged (deceptively, of course) as being so cute and adorable, and everything nice, on the surface. Yeah. But, in reality - Underneath all that sugar'n'spice stuff, Ariel's utterly contemptible selfishness was neither cute, nor adorable. No way. In fact, it was downright treacherous.

I mean - Ariel literally turned her back on all of her "people" and then left them to face, alone, the ugly wrath of the hideously wicked Ursula, just so that she could have a pair of legs in order to (get this!) chase after (and throw herself at) the very first thing that she saw in pants who just happened to have a handsome face..... (Sheesh!... Tsk. Tsk. on Ariel)

Well, darlings - I thought that Ariel was nothing but a self-centred brat-of-a-mermaid who put her whole family at risk just so that she could have a pair of legs in order to chase after some cute hunk. I mean, how shallow can a mermaid possibly get? She was a very bad role model, in my opinion.

NOT Disney's best. Not even close.
