Dickson McCunn is a mild-mannered, middle-aged, down-to-earth Glasgow provision merchant. With his shop in Mearns Street under new management and after 35 years of diligent attention to the grocery business, he anticipates a peaceful and prosperous retirement. He impulsively decides to take a solitary walking holiday in Carrick, intending to savour the delights of the countryside, spend evenings in village inns and indulge his fondness of reading. But Mr McCunn is plunged into a totally alien situation where he must repeatedly risk life and limb to rescue a damsel in distress! Followed by "Castle gay". Originally published 1922.
