The writing was just ridiculous. To expect the viewer to accept the incompetence of the marksmanship of these buffoons astounds me. They were lions -- not sparrows! As big as a Buick, for crying out loud! Too many misfires and missed opportunities to be plausible for me, sorry.

One of my favourite films. A bridge being built in Africa at the end of the 19th century forms the backdrop of an astonishing adventure, based on real events. An Irish engineer (Val Kilmer) gets hired to build the bridge by an arrogant businessman (Tom Wilkinson). His work is interrupted by the presence of two lions attacking his workers. Kilmer is ideally cast as the engineer Colonel Patterson, a good husband and impending father who is able to work with people completely outside his culture, and who finds himself in a desperate situation as the killings continue. Michael Douglas plays an exceptional character role as a fictitious hunter brought in to help, a man who doesn't like to hunt but does it because it's what he's good at. Frightening at times, this film really, really gets under your skin, makes you feel like you're there in Africa, and ensures that you'll never quite look at tall savannah grasses the same way again.

It's amazing how frightening a movie can be without space aliens, monsters, or an underwater beast attacking. Just take two large scary lions, Africa, many men working outdoors on a railroad, and your H0METHEATER. This prove to be the perfect combination for a horror movie. My friend (who loves talking back to the screen) and i both enjoyed this movie. There are some excellent sounds of the lions roaring and some good gun shots. The visuals of the lions take no back seat. The effects of them attacking and eating the men is done well. I still have nail marks in my shoulder when my friend became frighten from the scene of the lions eating the workers. My favorite scene for audio is when Val Kilmer's character sets a trap for the lion while having two professional killers waiting inside the contraption. The sounds the lion makes while facing the two killers in the trap is absolutely amazing!!! This movie is "Sound Freak" approved! Your neighbors will think you have a lion in your home. I'm giving this movie 5 stars!!!!!! A very good story, EXCELLENT sound effects (lions), very good visual effects of lions, and a good cast. A large medium rare steak with onions, green peppers, red peppers, white rice, carrots, biscuts, and a tall glass of red wine.

In the beginning of the film, you arrive on the train. You look at the scenery, you think "How beautiful". You get off the train, you look at the long grass and you say "How pretty." At the end of the film, you look at that same long grass. Tell me you don't see something very different. You see death.

"O King, live forever! My God has sent his angel and has shut the lions mouths that they have not hurt me. Forasmuch as before him innocence was found in me. And also before thee, oh King, have I done no hurt."
