The enchanting fantasy series from the award-winning author of the Sevenwaters novels continues, as embittered healer Blackthorn and her companion, Grim, struggle to fulfill the rules of her bond to the fey. . . .

Despite her personal struggles, Blackthorn agrees to help take care of a troubled young girl who has recently been brought to court, while Grim is sent to the girl's home at Wolf Glen to aid her wealthy father with a strange task--repairing a broken-down house deep in the woods. It doesn't take Grim long to realize that everything in Wolf Glen is not as it seems--the place is full of perilous secrets and deadly lies. . . .

Back at Winterfalls, the evil touch of Blackthorn's sworn enemy reopens old wounds and fuels her long-simmering passion for justice. With danger on two fronts, Blackthorn and Grim are faced with a heartbreaking choice--to stand once again by each other's side or to fight their battles alone.

This was a fantastic conclusion to Marillier's trilogy. Blackthorn and Grimm have reached a point of stability; however, room is left for future adventures (one can only hope!).

Marillier always does an amazing job extracting an exciting, beautifully written tale from even the smallest fragment of folklore. This series, in particular, has clever plots created from the idea that the old popular stories hold at least a grain of truth... How those truths manifest surprise both the readers and the characters.

Grim told him once that when you felt sad or angry or hopeless, a story could help. A story could lead you into a different world for a while. It might be a world where a foolish youngest son could turn into a brave and clever hero, or a beaten woman could end up as a wise leader of folk. And when the story was ended and that world was gone, you still had the idea of it inside you. Like a flame that didn’t go out . . .

Hadn’t I sworn I would never love anyone again, since doing so would be like nailing my heart up on the wall and inviting folk to throw knives into it?

To want justice – that cannot be a bad thing. But to let your want eat away at your heart . . . that would have been to pass victory into the hands of your enemy.
