A chilling psychological thriller from a CIA insider: in hot pursuit of a Russian spy ring on U.S. soil, a CIA analyst uncovers a deadly secret that will test her loyalty to the agency--and to her family. The Expats meets The Americans meets The Girl Before.

Vivian and Matt are a seemingly normal suburban couple, experiencing the same struggles as many North American families: juggling work and children, budgeting for a house in a decent school district. They're in love and life is good. Though Vivian can't share much about her CIA assignment with him, Matt has always been supportive, and his job as a software engineer allows him the flexibility needed to raise their four kids. But when she makes a startling discovery researching the CIA's Russian account, everything about her life and her marriage is cast in a new light--forcing her to make impossible and dangerous choices before she loses her job, her family and her life.

I was constantly guessing what would happen next and couldn't predict it. I loved how the CIA agent, Vivian, was constantly torn between her loyalty to the CIA and serving her country, and taking care of her four children. If you love intricate suspense, don't miss this book

Excellent book! Once you finish reading chapter one, you will be hooked! Suspenseful, and thrilling. This is a must read. If you like the tv show "The Americans" or "Homeland", then this is the book for you. I would rate this a 5*'s.

This book was a fun page-turner that was a little different than any "light who-dunit" that I've read so far. I finished in a quick two days and would recommend this book for a fun, easy read that has a good twist involved.

Just keep reading. At one point I thought that so many bad choices had been made and rationalized, that the story was hopeless. I plowed on and it did get to a tipping point that allowed for the possibility of good triumphing. Lots of extreme twists throughout the book. Also, there were so many opportunities for the book to end, but it continued with yet other twists. There HAS TO BE a sequel.

This was a really good read. It had a different twist to a great mystery. Definitely worth the read.

Who better than a former CIA Analyst to write a CIA thriller? Yes, Karen Cleveland is that but she is more; she is a mother and she knows what it would be like to face a battle between her need to protect her children and be true to her job which means her country too. Vivian Miller faces this battle when she uncovers a secret that will threaten her job, her family, and even her life. She's in a situation where no matter what she decides to do her family will never be the same again. Cleveland tells Vivian's story in a gripping way and you're sure to keep turning the pages till you reach the surprising finish.

Need to Know is a very good debut novel. I didn't expect the ending until I had about 1 page to go. Maybe others saw it coming, but I didn't. I would definitely read another novel by Karen Cleveland. It was a fun page-turner.

There’s a lot of suspense in the book that’s constantly building. It isn’t an action book and it isn’t James Bond. Vivian works for counterintelligence at the CIA. She enjoys her work and gets satisfaction from knowing she’s keeping her home country safe. But what happens when she discovers a secret close to home?

Maybe I’m cynical, but Vivian’s far more trusting than I am, hence the 3.5 stars and not 4-5. There’s a great deal of conflict, but the book is somewhat predictable, so it wasn’t as suspenseful as it could have been. Overall a good, quick read that’s worth picking up.

Meh! If you want the spy version of a Harlequin romance, this is it. Those of us raised on the Cold War Thrillers of the 70's and 80's will be disappointed by this book. It is a good summer book, light reading, but certainly nothing that makes me want to come back for more. I wanted to turn the main character in just for being so insipid.
