I love you, Svetlana. The first thing I read by her was her Dramacon manga series. Perfect young girl/teen/adult who still read teen literature or work in book stores so they just read everything to be aware of what's out there. Her books, Awkward and Crush go to another level than Dramacon. Realistic, relatable matched with flawless artwork to go with it. She doesn't go overboard on the story or the artwork. No distractions, allowing the reader to take it in because the dialogue does it all with that extra help of the art.

Heartfelt and genuine, Crush's story is true to the many dramas of middle school that feel all too severe at the time. A nice touch was seeing how well the author represented different orientations, preferences, and cultures, too.

I think this was a great book! out of the three books, she's written I liked this one the best! I love how for this book she made it so that the main character is not the one who's always getting picked on or is the really popular one. I recommend this book to people of all ages!

Crush is Svetlana Chmakova's best novel yet! It's so hard to explain, but she has captured the human "crushing" experience in such a real and relatable way that it almost feels like you're in that high school with Jorge and his friends, watching everything play out!(as a humble bystander of course, :D). If you have a heart and a human soul, you most definitely have to read this book! It will certainly revive your spirits and make your heart flutter like a love-struck butterfly's wings. I recommend this for any good reader out there in need of an even greater novel to delve into! :D

This is a perfect graphic novel and did not make me want to stab my eyes as many middle grade tales do. Chmakova is a genius at telling tales but also attaching in good messaging about bodily autonomy, bullying, and finding your true friends. I can't wait for more.

Growing up can be awkward, it can require you to stand up to bullies, and it is also a time of many firsts, including first love. Crush continues to build on the themes of adolescence that Chmakova has conveyed so well in her previous two graphic novels, only this time focusing on the theme of crushes. In his school, Jorge has become a sort of defender. He has a strong moral centre which pushes him to act, and to treat others respectfully. In reality, Jorge prefers to keep his distance from everyone but his two best friends, so he is quite unprepared when he suddenly finds himself thinking of this girl Jazmine. Chmakova looks at various types of relationships, as well as how the outcomes can differ when people treat each other differently. Romantic interactions are kept at the sweet level, and only focus on the emotional and social aspects. The story is fairly true to the ups and downs of such relationships. As usual, the characters are a diverse cast which eschew the normal stereotypes, and through their experiences, they naturally teach important life lessons, such as: respect for oneself and others, what it means to be a good friend, and finding a good balance. The art and writing is as superb as the first two graphic novels as well, making this another must read for the middle grade audience.

A Great Books for Great Kids pick. Jorge, Garrett and Olivia have always been best friends, but this year things are changing. This graphic novel about a boy’s first crush will appeal to 6th-8th graders.

I've become a fan of Svetlana Chmakova. In many ways, middle-grade slice-of-life graphic novels are cut from similar cloth, but I really enjoy her art style, casual diversity of characters, and her very obvious empathy for all the awkwardness of adolescence. First crushes are weird new ground, and she captures that well, as well as the gossip mill of middle school making things that much more complicated. Bonus points for dealing with consent and bodily autonomy as well.
