"This nightmarish story is incredibly propulsive and original. You won't shake it for a long time."
STEPHEN KING
"McKinty is one of the most striking and most memorable crime voices to emerge on the scene in years. His plots tempt you to read at top speed, but don't give in: this writing - sharply observant, intelligent and shot through with black humor - should be savored."
TANA FRENCH
"A masterpiece. You have never read anything quite like THE CHAIN and you will never be able to forget it."

Wow! What a wild ride this book is! A very quick read that caused me to stay up half the night reading. I couldn't put this book down! When Kylie gets kidnapped, her mother, Rachel, must pay a ransom and..... then kidnap the next child to keeping 'The Chain' going. The mastermind of 'The Chain' realized that unlike a chain letter that gets ripped up and nothing bad happens, to keep the chain going, the bad thing has to happen first. The Chain is a book you will not soon forget.

Totally preposterous and unbelievable! I know the author has said the idea for this book was inspired by a Mexican drug cartel which kidnapped victims who could be exchanged for other relatives willing to put their lives at risk to save a loved one. But I found it hard to believe that a woman dealing with breast cancer and chemotherapy would have the strength and fortitude and know how to pull off a kidnapping scheme of her own. Too many convenient plot devices.
"The Chain" succeeds only as a mindless page turner.

Whoo hoo, hang on to your hats for this one! Do not make the mistake that I did of starting it at home, then bringing it to work, only to gaze longingly at it sitting on my desk, dying to keep reading.
Clear your calendar before you start The Chain - and be prepared to think about how far you would go to save your child!

I was enticed to read this because I am a real fan of the author. Mckinty has written several books and I like his style, his wit, and his introspective musings of his characters. I was a little hesitant to read it because of the subject matter (child in peril, mother willing to do anything to save her); it is a plot devise I normally avoid.

Make no mistake, this is a very well written story, with a fast paced plot. I could find little of McKinty in the style, though. It read like a Harlan Coben bestseller, and that is not bad. It also felt like a screenplay, and I think it would make a good movie. Much has been written about McKinty's financial difficulties, and I hope this one puts him in a better tax bracket. But I hope he uses some of his future riches to write more Sean Duffy novels.

Plot premise is a stunner: what if someone kidnapped your child, and to get her back you had to kidnap, or even kill, somebody else's? Full of moral turning points that make this one a standout.

An excellent 'who-done-it' mystery. The plot moved seamlessly and kept me turning the pages to find the answer to who controls The Chain. I'd definitely recommend it,

A mystery for Millennials - the villains are found with a phone app.

A mystery not for Christians or the tolerant - “Jesus” and “Christ” are the predominant swear words; 2 Christian characters are mocked for the practice of their faith.

This story is crazy!! Crazy. The characters are tough and strong but pushed to the limit. When Rachel's daughter, Kylie, is kidnapped The Chain calls demanding money. Before they'll release Kylie, Rachel must kidnap another child and keep the chain going. How can she kidnap another child and inflict this pain on someone else? But how else will Kylie come home? This thriller will chill you and keep you reading long past your bedtime.

This was a great book and good on the agent that told the author to stop everything and write this into a novel. Fast paced, interesting premise and decent characters. For some readers they missed the 'bread crumbs' left by the author toward the end of the book but don't worry, if you don't pick up on the twist right away you will still have everything explained further on. I was able to pick up on it immediately and really appreciated how the author tied things together. Totally worth it!

If you’re looking for a spine-tingling, edge-of-your-seat read, The Chain by Adrian McKinty delivers. A demented kidnapping scheme demands payment and a new kidnap victim in custody before releasing your child. Set in New England, this quick-paced psychological suspense thriller explores the lengths a parent will go to protect their loved ones. Paramount bought the movie rights so expect to see more buzz about this one. I was first introduced to McKinty through his Sean Duffy mystery series set in 1980’s Belfast, topnotch mysteries for those who enjoy bad boy detectives and a historical setting. #wccls #northplainslibrary
