Blocked Florida novelist Clarissa Burden is tired of being married to an indifferent husband who resents her success and seduces the models who pose for his drawings - but she sees no way out. On the hottest (and longest) day of the year, however, things will change, thanks to the varied characters that Clarissa comes across that day, including a family of ghosts, a one-armed angel, a one-eyed man, some circus dwarfs, and a fly. The unusual but well-realized characters add additional flavor to this story of a woman gaining the courage to make changes in her life, but its prolific profanity means that this book isn't for everyone.
