Tom Grunick is the perfect modern anchorman, with charm and good looks but no background for the job. Jane Craig, the brilliant producer, has the job of trying to make Tom look like a newsman. Then there is Aaron Altman, a dedicated reporter, utterly devoid of on-camera charisma, and jealous of Tom's success - with the public and Jane.

Holly Hunter is fantastic and this is a good movie. It's pretty funny to see the fashion from the 1980s. How did we ever think those clothes were cool?

The right combination of biting comedy and honest drama allows Brooks to make a quasi-cynical statement regarding journalism in the age of infotainment without resorting to sarcasm or cliché. He presents an industry where stories of human suffering are gussied up for optimum viewer impact (and commercial breaks), emotions are often rehearsed, and personality trumps substance—yet his three stars (who all received Oscar nominations for their trouble) stumble ever onward convinced that it is all somehow worth it. A fully fleshed, slightly bitter, anti-romance co-starring Joan Cusack as a whacked-out girl Friday and Jack Nicholson in a surprise cameo as the network’s star anchorman whose slightest frown reverberates throughout the newsroom like a heavenly edict.

Obviously there's a lot more angles involved in what's wrong with mainstream media, but the insinuation (scandalous in 1987, was it Brokow? Jennings?) that news casters were good looking dumb bells is just hilarious and says a lot about all of us. Its a great little comedy in the tradition of Billy Wilder, with three wonderfully written and acted leads. Very underrated. Favorite quote: "It must be nice to always believe you know better, to always think you're the smartest person in the room." "No, it's awful."

This lame mix of diluted Woody Allen and mainstream rom-com is one of the most confounding additions to the Collection. Sure, William Hurt is a stud and Albert Brooks is funny. That ain't enough.

Take two rival TV reporters: one handsome, one talented, both male. Add one producer, female. Mix well and watch the sparks fly.

I love the writing and I adore Holly Hunter in this. One of the few films that admits that women actually wear pantyhose instead of topless stockings.
